Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill (COCP)

Common brands of combined contraceptive pills are Rigivedon, Microgynon, Yasmin and Ovranett however the list is endless. This type of pill is usually taken for 3 weeks followed by a week off where a period occurs.

In recent months there has been circulating media attention that this type of pill is unsafe as it increases the risks of fatal blood clots. The combined contraceptive pill has been widely available since the 1960’s and has had ongoing safety testing. It slightly increases the ability of blood to form clots and so can be associated with clotting disorders.

Here at Ashfields all patients prescribed the combined contraceptive pill are screened for associated risks which would indicate this method of contraception is unsafe to use. Annual checks ensure our patients continue to be safe in taking the combined pill.
